So I was reading these two articles on entrepreneur.com by Grant Cardone and Ivan Misner about different types of action that exist and the real secret to success. It was interesting, because both stories sort of fell into what we have been talking about since January. It goes to show that no matter what, we have choices about our future based on what type of action we are willing to put forward. In Cardone’s article he put forth that there are 4 types of Action and I found them all to be true and there are people here running office’s or in the training program that fall into each of the categories.
- “Doing nothing” At this level you are not taking actions that move yourself forward in order to learn, achieve success or control some area of your life. Despite what it may sound like, do not assume “doing nothing” requires no effort, energy or work. Regardless of which degree of action you operate at, they all require work in their own way.
- “Retreaters” If you operate at this level you are taking actions in reverse. People who retreat are probably trying to avoid the negative experience they imagine will come from the results of taking action and possibly failing. This level personifies the “fear of success” phenomenon. Like doing nothing, this level of action requires hard work and effort to maintain.
- “Normal” This is the biggest group today. From the outside and on the surface this level of action is accepted as normal, but it is this level of action that created the trap of the middle class and maintains that dangerous mentality. Although some members of this group may occasionally attempt to generate exceptional levels of action, they almost never create anything in exceptional quantities. As long as average works, people at this level are fine with it — they are comfortable with the status quo.
- “Massive” Until adults told me otherwise I didn’t know anything other than massive action. People would frown and hint that maybe I should calm down. Did that happen to you as a kid? This fourth degree of action, as farfetched as it may sound, is the most natural state of action there is for us. I have been called a lot of things because of my commitment to action: workaholic, obsessive, greedy, never satisfied, driven. Every time I have been labeled like this I have noticed that person is operating at less than the fourth degree of action. I have never had someone more successful than me consider my levels of action excessive or bad.–Cardone
I would put most of you in #3 but we for sure have #1 and #2 all around us. Maybe 3 or 4 of you are maintaining #4 Level. It’s easy to see by the numbers you or your office do. That brings me to my second point the secret to success.
Misner’s article was about him writing a book and doing interviews of not just rich, successful people but successful athletes, explores, and even students starting out and it was asking them all the same question.
Here is what Misner wrote:
“I then asked many highly successful people who had obtained great wealth or personal success in business, sports, or science. They generally told me that success involved things like: vision, goals, passion, persistence, and systems. Sound familiar?
This made me very curious. So much so that while I was teaching at a California State University in the Los Angeles area, I asked hundreds of college students what they thought was the secret to success. These were all undergraduate students in business with little or no real-world business experience. What I found amazing was that they also said success involved things like: vision, goals, passion, persistence, and systems!
Everyone I interviewed or wrote about regarding the secret to success – from Buzz Aldrin to Erin Brockovich, from average businesspeople to undergraduate college students – gave me virtually the same answer. So if we all know what it takes to be successful, why is it that we aren’t all as successful as we’d like to be?”
I have found that many people are looking for some mysterious and ever-elusive secret to success beyond what they already sense to be important. The truth is, there is no great mystery. In fact, very often “success is simply the uncommon application of common knowledge.”–Misner
